I was sent the following release by Altum Designs. The MODUAL range is the London based companies first product and very promising it looks too. It’s a different type of bicycle multi-tool compared to the switch-out tool cluster we’re all use to. As the name suggests, this is more of a modular Tool System (MTS) and is also available with a cleverly designed MODUAL Tool Roll (MTR).
I’m looking forward to handling one of these from the next wave of prototypes and bringing you a review. If you want to be ahead of the game, back their Kickstarter Campaign
The ‘Modual’ (MTR) is an innovative 13 function bicycle multi-tool and MTR an accompanying tool roll that also provides an effective means of transporting a cyclist’s essential items. Both products are comprehensive enough for use at home but compact enough for the road. MODUAL seeks to offer a portable yet powerful alternative to conventional folding multi-tools.
The ‘Modual’ is a modular system that utilises tool bits rather than pivoting allen keys. Tyre levers snap magnetically to each side forming an ergonomic handle whilst its elongated body provides superior leverage. The head of the tool features a pair of tool bit slots, one acting as a wrench and the other like a screwdriver, which allow for easy access to any bolt. The ‘Modual Tool System’ holds four tool bits internally so it can be reconfigured to match the individual requirements of any bike.
Modual Tool System Features
- 2/2.5/3/4/5/6/8mm tool bits
- PH2 tool bit
- T25 tool bit
- Tool bit extender
- 3.23/3.3/3.45mm spoke keys
- Tyre levers
The ‘Modula Tool Roll’ is a novel twist on the traditional tool roll and is constructed from hard-wearing Cordura. The top flap provides a workstation whether you are at home or on the roadside. It even features a hidden magnet so no longer is there a risk of tool bits getting lost. Internal sections are divided to store MTS (and its attachments) as well as other cycling essentials and there is an external strap for securing a spare inner tube. MTR is spacious when flat but when folded up forms a compact bundle that can be strapped under a saddle or sit perfectly in a jersey pocket.
The range is currently available on Kickstarter:
